Today, the New York Times technology blog reported that the rumored Google Phone is more like a mobile phone operating system. Sources described it as a “reference platform,” a set of specifications for how hardware makers would build a phone based on that software. Will the iPhone revolutionize Web browsing?
July 3, 2007: Some have called the new iPhone a "breakthrough handheld computer." The fairly-tight coupling with Google might be explained by the fact that Eric Schmidt, President of Google, sits on the Board of Directors of Apple. Neither the iPhone nor Google can "see" Flash movies, but the iPhone can play videos from Google-owned YouTube. I already have a web site. Do I need .mobi?
The .mobi domain name is essentially a marketing strategy for businesses with customers who use cell phones. It tells cellphone users that the website has been optimized for mobile devices. There are four key strageties to put this to work for your business:
1. Discoverability
Google is already beta-testing Mobile Web Search which searches through sites that have been specifically designed for mobile phones and devices. Webdevelopers are able to submit sitemaps for mobile-optimized Web sites.
2. Predictability
Well-designed Web sites can be viewed on Internet-ready cell phones already, but until now there has been no consistent guideline for usability. So that cell phone web site visitors will have some idea of how the site will work, and how to find what they're looking for, .mobi is creating a style guide and best practice policy so that information and services ofered will work reliably over a range of PDAs and mobile devices. Predictability is the mother of adoption.
3. One Internet
The Internet was designed to be flat, with easy and equal access. The .mobi domain is structured so that mobile users can still access other domains like .com on their cellphones.
4. Usefulness
Cell phone usage in Europe and Japan is nearly universal among adults. As more information and services become available in the American market, the usefulness of the mobile device will increase.
